You wouldn’t believe what my brothers, my dad, and I did last Sunday. We took a tour to the Sahara Desert. Our tour guide was like a genius and knew everything there was to know about it. He told us that the Sahara Desert recieved less than three inches of rainfall per year. It could maybe rain twice a week but then not rain again for a few years. He also said that the Sahara is one of the hottest places on the earth and can heat up to 136 degrees fahrenheit. There are few places to stop at in the Sahara Desert which makes it near impossible to cross the entire thing. The desert is extremely dry and can dehydrate you at rapid speeds. There are approximately 2.5 million people living in the Sahara today, most of them being from Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, and Algeria. I knew it was going to be hard to spend a day in the Sahara Desert, but I had no idea that people can live in those conditions everyday of their lives. It is not only hard for the people there but also the animals living their such as rattlesnakes, kangaroo rats, and kit foxes which don’t come out in the open unless it is night out. Other animals include the desert hedgehog, barbary sheep, dorcas gazelle, spotted hyena, toads, frogs, lizards, and sand fox. The Sahara Desert takes up about 19% of the world’s total land and 25% of the Sahara is covered in sand sheets and dunes. The highest point is Mount Koussi which is 11,204 feet high and the lowest point is 436 feet high which is below sea level. It was fun visiting the Sahara Desert, but next time I’ll be sure to bring extra water and a lot less to carry in my backpack. I don’t know how the tours there can handle being their almost every day and do that for a job.
Last weekend I had my first trip to a motocross track and let me tell you, it was amazing. It had to be one of the best times I have ever had. The first race was sheduled at 10:30 and since we were over 2 hours away we woke up at about 6:15 and planned to head out at 7:00 to get decent seats. I have to say it seemed like 2 days rather than 2 hours because I was so anxious to get there. About half way there we realized we forgot to have breakfast so we had to stop by at the nearest Mcdonalds and pick up some food. I normally just have a number 3, a double cheeseburger and fries but today I was starving. The day before all I had was half a plate of spaghetti for dinner. We hurridly ate and were out of their in about ten minutes. Finally about 9:20 or so we reached the Motocross track. I was urging my dad to walk faster because I just coudln’t wait any longer until he reminded me we still had over and hour to wait before the first race begun. The stadium around the track was huge and probably seated near 45,000. The next hour went by extremely fast because we walked around in the pit area and got a few autographs and learned a little bit about some of the drivers including my favorite, Gary Sanders who was currently 1st in the points with a comfortable lead. We left the pit area at 10:20 to go back to our seats. The announcer said there would be six heats with eight drivers in each heat and the top four of each heat would advance to the final race. The heats were only 10 laps with the final being 35. In the first heat Jason Williams who was currently fifth in points recieved first. Gary Sanders was in the sixth heat and dominated the whole pack winning by more than 7 seconds. The eighth heat race was intense and ended with Vince Johnson losing to Matt Redding by a quarter of a second but still advancing to the final. The final race had Matt Redding leading from laps 3-26 until Jason Williams sped past him on a turn. Gary was sitting back in fourth until lap 31 when he started to pick up the pace passing two opponents before lap 34. On the last stretch Gary was picking up on Jason Williams, I was getting so into the race I didnt even realize I was standing and the people behind me couldn’t see, me being 6’4″ and all they weren’t too happy about it. Gary couldn’t quite catch him and recieved second losing by only 1.2 seconds. All in all I had a good time but it would have been even better if Gary had won.
Last weekend I went to a badger game, they were playing Indiana. It was fun and exciting watching the Badgers cream them 55-20. PJ Hill dominated and showed that the badgers do have a good offense at times. Watching them on tv is fun but the atmosphere at Camp Randall really tops it of especially the badger theme “jump around”. It was the first badger game I have ever seen and I can’t wait to go to more in the future.
